Replacing an Aluminum Boat Transom

Introduction

Coosa is an excellent choice to replace the wood in your aluminum boat's transom. The 26 Pound density material does not need any extra fiberglass and can be installed directly against the aluminum skin. Generally we like to paint the core piece with gelcoat to protect it from UV damage. In our application we used Bostik 920 (or 3M 5200) to bond it to the aluminum skin. All of the fasteners were replaced with stainless steel.

Procedure:

  1. Remove old wood transom
  2. Template Coosa board and cut to shape
  3. Gelcoat finished Coosa board
  4. Install with marine adhesive (surround holes with 920)
  5. Screw and bolt with stainless fasteners.

Since the Coosa will not absorb water and will not rot you can simply cut a small mouse hole for your keel drain to give access to the hole.
